What to do in the event of the death of an Italian citizen abroad
In the event of the death abroad of a loved one of Italian nationality, it is necessary to transcribe the death in Italy. For this purpose, the documents to be presented are:
- Death certificate, issued by the competent Civil Status Office. The document must be original and, where applicable, translated and legalised. Translation and legalisation are not necessary when the death occurs in a country that has acceded to the Vienna Convention of 1976, as these countries issue the form in a multilingual version (Austria, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland and Turkey).
- Document proving the nationality of the deceased (identity card, Italian passport or certificate of Italian citizenship). This document is not necessary if the deceased is registered in the AIRE consular register.
DEATH ABROAD: REPATRIATION OF REMAINS
When the sad news of the death comes to light, the Consulate General or the Italian Embassy must also be contacted to obtain the transfer of the body or its ashes to Italy.
For the repatriation of the body, in fact, the Mortuary Passport issued by the competent Italian Consular Authority is required, upon presentation of a series of documents:
- Death certificate;
- Certificate from the local health authority certifying that hygiene and safety standards have been observed;
- Certificate guaranteeing the absence of infectious and endemic diseases;
- Authorisation from the Italian municipality where the burial will take place;
- Document proving the citizenship of the deceased in case he/she is not registered in the Register of the Italian Population Resident Abroad (AIRE).
