How and by whom to apply for a student visa in Italy

If you are an EU citizen

In the case of an EU citizen who wishes to study in an Italian school or university, it is not necessary to apply for a student visa. However, if your stay will be longer than 90 days, you must fill in a Certificate of Registration in order to be granted a Resident Card. This procedure is done directly in the commune of the city where you intend to live.

What are the requirements for the Residence Permit?

In order to complete the application for a residence card, you must submit certain requirements. It is important that the documents are submitted in their originals and copies as required. These are:

  • Original and copy of passport or identity card.
  • Original and copy of the certificate of enrollment at the school or university where the course or studies are being carried out. 
  • Rental contract in the city where you are going to study.
  • Identity document of the owner of the place of residence.
  • Income tax return, household composition or statement issued by the bank.
  • European Health Insurance Card or European Insurance Certificate.

 If you are a non-EU citizen

Here the procedure changes according to the period of stay in Italy for study purposes. There are two types of permits to study in Italy. 

For short-term studies in Italy

If less than 90 days. For the duration of the course, a study visa is not necessary. However, an application for a declaration of stay must be made within the first eight days after arrival in the country. This is done at the local Italian post office in the area where you will be staying.

For long-term studies

If the course lasts longer than 90 days, no matter what type of study you have to attend, you will have to apply for a student visa. The student visa must be applied for at the embassy or consulate of your country of origin. The student residence permit will be valid only for studying in Italy, it does not allow you to work or any other accreditation that would require another type of visa.

Documents required to obtain a Student Visa

  • Printed Visa application form. This must be completed in full and signed by the applicant.
  • Passport valid for at least the entire stay in the country plus three months.
  • Two blank passport pages.
  • One passport-size photo.
  • Declaration of funds. It must have sufficient resources for the total maintenance of the estimated time spent in the country. A minimum of 910 euros per month. It can be the applicant's or the person financially responsible for the applicant.
  • Certificate of medical insurance. This should cover emergency and hospitalisation expenses. It needs to be valid internationally or at least in the country. You can buy it in your home country or in Italy, but it is essential to have it in order to apply for a visa.
  • Proof of payment for the course. Issued by the institute where the studies will be carried out.
  • Admission letter from the institution stating that you have been selected to study the student plan you applied for.
  • Proof of accommodation during the time you will be in the country. Either the rental contract with the owners' identification attached or a declaration of hospitality by a responsible Italian.
  • Return ticket to your country of origin after the end of your study programme.
  • Declaration of financial readiness for an eventual return to your country.

Will you be studying in Italy for more than three months? You must apply for a Residence Permit

If your stay in the country will be longer than three months, then you also need to apply for a Residence Permit. The application must be made within eight working days of your arrival.

Steps to apply for a Residence Permit

  • Go to the post office of the place where you are going to reside and look for the Sportello Amico. Here, you will pick up the first residence permit kit. This is a yellow striped envelope with a form to fill in.
  • Pay for the payment form and keep the back-up.
  • Check the requested data very carefully and fill in the form carefully. You should do this in block letters and black pen. Make sure you fill in all the boxes indicated.
  • Do not seal your envelope, as the office will help you check that everything is in perfect order for your application.
  • Take it to the post office. Remember to bring the requested documents along with the originals for verification.
  • You pay the stipulated fees for the processing and issuance of the residence permit. These are different amounts.
  • Finally, you will be given a receipt that will allow you to monitor, via the State Police website, the status of the process and the summons that will be issued to the Police Headquarters.

Required documents

  • Photocopy of passport.

  • Two copies of the passport pages containing: stamp of the Italian embassy or consulate in your country and stamp and date of entry into Italian territory.
  • Tax stamp equivalent to 16 euros. You can get this stamp in tobacconists' shops.
  • Copy of the certificate of enrollment. It must be issued by the institute where you will study and stamped by the Italian consulate or embassy in your country at the time of visa application.
  • Payment form found inside the envelope of the first residence permit kit.
  • Four passport-size photographs.
  • Valid medical insurance. The same as the one you have to apply for the visa. It must allow the use of the National Health Service.

Extra benefits of the Residence Permit

The residence permit gives you some extra benefits apart from residing in the country for the period you need according to your study plan, and these are:

  • Time work permit. With a maximum duration of 20 hours per week and 1,040 per year.
  • The power to leave Italy for a period not exceeding six months.

Conditions of the application process

While you are waiting for the confirmation of your Residence Permit, there are some conditions that you have to take into account in order not to affect the process.

For example, the fact that you cannot leave Italy freely. At least not to the Schengen states. In case you have to visit your home country for any eventuality or emergency, you should take a direct flight and look for the list of countries allowed for stopovers.
